How to have a conversation with God

You’re gonna be amazed at the detail God will give you in a written conversation with him.

(How to hear his thoughts on things that matter to you). Adapted from a video by @markholloway57

God is interested in us, and He loves it when we’re interested in what he has to say. Contrary to popular opinion, God is on your side. God wants to do life with you. He doesn’t want to just be your Master. He makes it quite clear in scripture that He wants to be your friend. That’s what it says. So you can ask God all sorts of questions and expect to get full sentence and paragraph answers in a written back and forth conversation. You can ask Him about your job, your husband, your kids, your mortgage, and expect answers right now. That’s the incredible thing. So, if you would like a conversation backwards and forwards with God, in writing, here’s what you do:

  • Write your question to God. (e.g. God, I’m really interested in if we should go on vacation this summer as a family). God cares about your family and what you do with your free time. So, don’t be surprised if you actually get an answer that seems like it could be from a benevolent God.

  • Write the beginning of God’s sentence as if He were answering your question (e.g. [Your Name], what I’m saying about a summer vacation for your family is…).

  • Start writing from there, expecting God to give you the words.

  • After you’ve written God’s answer, you might think, “There’s no way that was actually God. He’s never spoken to me in that much detail,” or “I’m to sinful to hear from Him like this,” That sort of thing…

  • Write that as your next question.

  • Then start writing again, expecting God to give you the words as you write.

  • You might think, “This isn’t real. I’m just making it up,” or “That’s just my own thoughts.”

  • Take note that doubt attacked John the Baptist even, and it’s going to attack you.

  • Write that question down (i.e. God, I think this is my own thoughts, is this my own thoughts?)

  • Write again, expecting God to give you the words.

  • Sooner or later, if it’s important to you to hear God’s voice, you eventually think, “Hang on, I think that maybe I’m actually hearing God’s voice.”

  • Write that as your next question (God, I think this might be you now, but how is it possible? I’ve never heard you like this, surely it’s my own thoughts.).

  • Start writing, expecting God to supply the words as you do.

The thoughts above come from Mark Holloway in this TikTok video.

I believe this method will work for most people who try it from a good heart with the belief that God can do anything He wants, especially with people who are actively trying to let God's will be their will. God wants to speak with us. He yearns for a relationship with us. I hope this helps you form a more complete relationship with Him.

[NOTE: The enemy speaks too. Satan and his followers are the ones who give you everyday stray thoughts that belittle you or bring shame to you beyond the shame that helps to produce repentance. God would say, "You've done wrong," where the enemy would say, "There's something wrong with you." God would say, "You messed up. Let's correct this." where the enemy would say, "You messed up. You're worthless." I'll do a whole post on this someday, but just knowing that Satan and his followers already speak to you and tell you you're ugly or a bad mom or whatever else you've been thinking is your own mind putting you down, just knowing that they do that and knowing what to look for will put you ahead of the pack. Pray and be on your guard about this, but don't let it stop you from trying to have a conversation with God.]

Below is part of a conversation that I had with God, part of it the other day and part of it after I type this sentence.

God: I love you, so so so so so so SO much!

Me: Thank You for loving me. I love You, too.

God: You love me so so so so so so SO much too, Jonathan. Don’t you dare doubt that!

Me: Thank You. I do.

God: You do doubt it.

Me: You know that’s not what I meant though.

God: But it’s true. Jonathan, I’m not asking you to love me perfectly before you can claim to love me a lot. I know your heart and you DO love me a lot. Just trust me, Ok?

Me: Ok. Thanks, God.

God: Good things are coming, Jonathan.

Me: You had me thinking about Elijah living by the brook during the 3 year drought and trusting for your provision. He wasn’t told how long he would have to be there, but he trusted You. You want me to put some of the conversations we will have together on that blog.

God: I do. How does that make you feel?

Me: A little nervous. My mind went to my dad and what he would have to say about it.

God: Your dad is a good man, and he’s going to love you continually. He loved you when he thought that you were absolutely bonkers, and he’ll love you no matter what comes. You don’t have to worry about backlash from him. Your relationship is going to stay strong.

Me: Thank You, God. Wait, You want this conversation to be on the blog?

God: I do.

Me: Not many people are going to see it at this point.

God: That's true.

Me: I'm having trouble knowing what to say to You now.

God: This isn't for you. It's for them.

Me: The ones who might read it?

God: The ones who WILL read it. Come on Jonathan, I've told you that people are going to know who you are someday.

Me: That makes me uncomfortable to type that where just anybody could read it.

God: That's because you're worried about what people might think. You're worried that they'll think you're crazy, but you're not. Listen Jonathan, the ones who think you're crazy will think you're crazy even if you play this close to your chest. Eventually, the truth will come out, and people will know that these conversations were from Me.

Me: Conversations? Like with an "s"? [Editing this I saw that God had already said we're going to put some of the conversations (plural) we have on this blog.]

God: Yes. This is going to be a regular thing, my man.

Me: I don't know how I feel about that...

God: It's just going to take some getting used to. You're going to be ok. You see people on social media claiming to get messages from Me all the time. They're brave. I just need you to be brave too.

Me: They're going to think this is religious psychosis.

God: Many of them are, but some won't.

Me: I'll do it of course. I know You'll help me to be brave. You've helped me with so many other things. I've healed so much from my past in this season of isolation. That was You, and I'm so grateful.

Me: God? Are you there? I know You're here, but I guess You're not talking anymore. I love You. I'll talk to You later.

I didn't know that this is what the blog was going to be about. I'm nervous about people reading this, but it's apparently what God wants. He hasn't steered me wrong yet, so I'm going to post it. God bless.

Hey, I'm Jonathan...

I started blogging in October 2026 about my conversations with God. They (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) have been talking with me since August 2024 when they began a season of isolation and poverty focused on growth and healing that I'm still in. There have been really hard times where They allowed the enemy to affect me in a big way, and I'm sure there will be more, but I've come to a place where I'm at peace with that. I believe God will restore to me all I've lost and then some. After all, Jesus is going to make us who love Him kings and I can only assume queens (Rev. 5:10), putting the past of suffering and lack behind us. Join me as I share conversations that I have with God meant specifically to help you.
